McDonald's to remove artificial ingredients from its burgers

The company just announced that a majority of their burger's are now free of preservatives.

The move to the classic burger, which appears in the McDonald's hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, McDouble, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and Big Mac, brings almost two-thirds of the chain's burgers away from any artificial ingredients.

As of now, nearly two-thirds of the company's burgers and sandwiches are free of artificial products, which were removed from the company's cheese slices, Big Mac special sauce and several types of buns.

In 2016, the fast food chain removed artificial preservatives from its chicken nuggets along with the high fructose corn syrup in its buns. Gherkins on sandwiches still have artificial preservatives, but customers can order hamburgers without pickles.

The inclusion of the Big Mac and Quarter-Pounder on the preservative-free list is another win for McDonald's in their effort to offer more healthier options for customers.

"We've been laser-focused on using our size and scale to implement meaningful changes across our entire menu, changes that we know are important to our customers, our franchisees, our people and our planet", the McDonald's press release said. "As interest in more wholesome diets has spread, fast-food chains that have taken sales from McDonald's in recent years have revisited their recipes too", Julie Jargon observes for the Wall Street Journal.

"We've evolved everything from when we serve certain items, to how we cook our beef patties, to the ingredients we use across our menu".

Recently, McDonald's has been going towards a more health conscious route.

The restaurant is removing all artificial ingredients from the burgers. These sandwiches still contain some artificial flavors, preservatives, colors or a mixture.

The chain swapped their frozen Quarter Pounder patties for fresh beef, and added new, healthier options to their Happy Meal lineup a year ago.
