Amazon raises wages for lower-paid workers

Bernie Sanders and others, Amazon stressed that the number reflects its employees' pay worldwide; the median salary for a full time employee in the US, the company said, is $34,123 - a figure it said should be compared to other retailers.

"We will be working to gain Congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage".

Amazon will pay all of its US employees a minimum of $15 an hour, more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

The pay hike, one of the largest awarded by any major US company, will affect 250,000 Amazon employees and 100,000 seasonal employees who are hired at Amazon sites during the holiday season.

Amazon also is encouraging other large U.S. employers to follow its lead and said it would lobby United States legislators for an increase in the federal minimum wage, now at only $7.25. "The current rate of $7.25 was set almost a decade ago", said Jay Carney, senior vice-president of Amazon global corporate affairs. Amazon's hourly operations and customer service employees, some who already make $15 per hour, will also see a wage increase, the Seattle company said. The most recent statistics from the U.S. Labor Department showed that in August, the pace of hiring rose again and wages grew at their fastest pace in nine years. "In this country, our standard should be that if you work 40 hours a week you should not be living in poverty", he added.

After weeks of hammering Amazon for its treatment of its warehouse workers, U.S. Sen.

This is what the political revolution is all about: today 350,000 Amazon workers found out they are getting a raise to at least $15 an hour.

The retail giant revealed it would hike the minimum wage it pays workers in London to £10.50 an hour from £8.20 previously, and to £9.50 an hour from £8 for the rest of the UK. "It's overdue, but it's a really good step", he said.

Christine Owens, executive director at advocacy group National Employment Law Project, said Amazon's call for changes at the federal level was a "significant" move.

A spokesperson for Amazon told Business Insider, "James Bloodworth worked at Amazon for only nine days in early 2016 with the sole goal to create negative content for his book". Amazon shares fell close to 0.5% in the premarket before retracing losses to trade up 0.2% on Tuesday afternoon. "James is still happy to sell his book on Amazon".
