Kavanaugh: I said things I ‘should not have said’ during Senate testimony

But the Republicans are exercised too, with Chuck Grassley lecturing reporters on their bias and Orrin Hatch decrying the process that Kavanaugh was put through.

Cornyn also noted that the entire process could have been avoided if Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-California) went through the normal process and alerted committee members about the allegation when she first heard of it.

The controversy over Kavanaugh's nomination is coming to a head now as the Senate prepares to vote on his nomination, likely in the next two days.

"Brett Kavanaugh displayed a lack of judicial temperament that would be disqualifying for any court, and certainly for elevation to the highest court of the land", the letter states.

The Kavanaugh fight has riveted Americans weeks before November 6 elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from the Republicans.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters marched on the Supreme Court and the Hart Senate Office Building bearing signs that said "Believe Survivors" and "Kava-Nope" while chanting against the candidate.

Despite his performance, Kavanaugh said he can be counted on to be impartial as a judge.

Hyde-Smith didn't answer. The Mississippi Republican, sworn in last April for a seat the GOP needs to keep, hopped on a Senate subway that sped her toward the Capitol. Meanwhile, truth in testimony aside, 48% oppose Kavanaugh's nomination to 41% in favor. Kavanaugh has denied the accusations.

Separately, the Secret Service said it was investigating a similar letter addressed to the US President Donald Trump. The letters never reached the Pentagon building, said Chris Sherwood, a Defense Department spokesman.

The letter also says Kavanaugh gave "intemperate, inflammatory" responses and was "discourteous" to senators. Democrats want a briefing from the FBI about the investigation, but Republicans declined that request.

He appeared to be trying to draw the sting from his explosive testimony last week in which he denied claims that he sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford when they were teenagers in the 1980s.

In a letter to President Trump, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Judiciary Committee ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein discussed their understanding that "conducting background investigations on nominees has always been the FBI's standard practice, and it is common for such background investigations to be reopened when new information about a nominee becomes known". If it passes, it could pave the way for a final vote as early as Saturday. The Republicans needed to get the motion to limit debate before the end of the calendar day Wednesday to allow the Friday vote.

The judiciary committee voted to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate, which is expected to attempt a vote Friday. Kavanaugh wrote that his testimony "reflected my overwhelming frustration at being wrongly accused".

White House spokesman Raj Shah said the Trump administration was "fully confident" Kavanaugh had the necessary support. They include Mark Judge, Leland Keyser and Patrick Smyth, the people Ms. Blasey Ford has said she remembers at the party where she was assaulted.

"After doing my due diligence and now that the record is apparently closed, I will vote against his confirmation", she said.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, said while her party had agreed to a week-long Federal Bureau of Investigation probe with a finite scope, "We did not agree that the White House should tie the FBI's hands".

"When the noise fades, when the uncorroborated mud washes away, what's left is the distinguished nominee who stands before us", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor.
