At least 11 people die as 5.9 magnitude quake rocks northern Haiti

The country's civil protection agency has since issued a statement outlining that the quake has caused damage to several buildings, including an auditorium that collapsed.

The government said eight of the 12 victims were killed in Port-de-Paix, capital of Haiti's Nord-Ouest department, while three were in Gros-Morne and one in Saint-Louis-du-Nord.

The earthquake's epicentre was about 19 km northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix, the United States Geological Survey said.

Government spokesman Eddy Jackson Alexis said that 11 people have been reported dead so far, the AFP news agency reported on October 7.

Another four people died in and around the town of Gros-Morne further south, including a boy struck by a falling building, mayor Jean Renel Tide said.

General Coordinator of the Cuban Medical Brigade, Evelio Betancourt, said that two surgical teams were sent to support Haitian health personnel.

An natural disaster hit northern Haiti late on Saturday, killing at least 14 people and sparking a scramble by rescue agencies to help residents of the worst-hit towns in the impoverished Caribbean country.

Le Nouvelliste newspaper said one person died when an auditorium collapsed in the town of Gros Morne, and that detainees were released from a police holding cell that was damaged.

Port-de-Paix and the northern island of Tortuga, were also among the areas worse hit.

No immediate damage or injuries had been reported.

Moise also visited Gros-Morne, about 30 miles to the southeast. Residents using saws or their bare hands scrambled to recover metal support rods from the debris for resale, before being chased away by authorities.

The devastating 7.0-magnitude quake that struck in January 2010 left more than 1.5 million people homeless.

Tens of thousands of people are still believed to be displaced as a result.

The damage caused was worth an estimated 120 percent of GDP in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
