The 39-year-old passer, in his 18th National Football League campaign, needed 201 yards coming into the feature contest and reached 228 yards with a touchdown throw to Tre'Quan Smith down the right sideline as cheering supporters roared in the Superdome.

It also took Brees fewer games than Manning to pass for 71,740 yards - Brees achieved the feat in 253 games compared to Manning's 266.

The Redskins will visit the Saints for this week's Monday Night Football matchup in New Orleans.

The 39-year-old has continued to play at an elite level despite being in his 18th season as he has thrown for 1,295 passing yards on a 75.8 percent completion rate with eight touchdown passes to zero interceptions while holding a 115.3 passer rating.

"I knew we were within striking distance" of the record, Brees said.

Brees, who turns 40 in January, sparked the Saints to a 2010 Super Bowl victory, taking Most Valuable Player honors in a 31-17 triumph over Manning's Indianapolis Colts.
