Brees is all-time passing leader

The 39-year-old passer, in his 18th National Football League campaign, needed 201 yards coming into the feature contest and reached 228 yards with a touchdown throw to Tre'Quan Smith down the right sideline as cheering supporters roared in the Superdome.

It also took Brees fewer games than Manning to pass for 71,740 yards - Brees achieved the feat in 253 games compared to Manning's 266.

The Redskins will visit the Saints for this week's Monday Night Football matchup in New Orleans.

"Also, let this serve as the congratulations for the touchdown record because as you can see, I'm very busy", Manning added.

The 39-year-old has continued to play at an elite level despite being in his 18th season as he has thrown for 1,295 passing yards on a 75.8 percent completion rate with eight touchdown passes to zero interceptions while holding a 115.3 passer rating.

"I knew we were within striking distance" of the record, Brees said.

Brees, who turns 40 in January, sparked the Saints to a 2010 Super Bowl victory, taking Most Valuable Player honors in a 31-17 triumph over Manning's Indianapolis Colts.

Senate debates Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat". That support all but assured Republicans of the votes they needed to push the nomination across the finish line.

Manning, a New Orleans native whose father, Archie, starred for the Saints, could not attend the game because of a scheduling conflict.

"Let's have it happen first", Brees said.

Leading up to Monday night's date with the Redskins, Brees is reflecting on his first-ever pre-season experience in Miami in bring it all full circle.

With the game in hand, Payton subbed Brees off the field after the two-minute warning so the quarterback could have one more interaction with the appreciative crowd.

The Saints, at coach Sean Payton's insistence, took a chance on Brees in 2006, and the payoff has been extraordinary.

The Saints and their fans have had a lot to cheer about on Monday.
