Flight data collected by AirNavRadarBox, a firm that tracks private and commercial planes all over the world, showed that the first of the two planes left Riyadh late October 1 and touched down in Istanbul the following day at 3:15am.

His disappearance is likely to further deepen divisions between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Now a source close to the Saudi royals has told DailyMail.com that an alternative version of events is being discussed inside high levels of the Saudi government.

The issue threatens to strain the close relationship Prince Mohammed has forged with the Trump administration, which until now has been willing to turn a blind eye to alleged Saudi human rights violations in Yemen, where it leads a coalition bombing Houthi rebels that has killed thousands of civilians.

France said it was seeking an explanation as to how an "accomplished and esteemed" journalist had vanished.

Jeremy Hunt has warned Saudi Arabia that "friendships depend on shared values" after questioning the country's ambassador over the disappearance of a journalist. The planes are owned by Riyadh-based Sky Prime Aviation Services, according to public records.
