At least 5 killed in heavy rains in Spain’s Mallorca

The Spaniard sprung into action after the town of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, about 60 kilometres east of the island's capital Palma, was devastated by the rainstorm.

At least 10 people including two Britons were killed as heavy rain and flash floods hit the Spanish island of Mallorca, authorities said on Wednesday.

Witnesses said a dry creek overflowed, creating a strong current of water and mud that buried cars and tore down trees.

A destroyed auto and debris are seen on the street as heavy rain and flash floods hit Sant Llorenc de Cardassar on the island of Mallorca, Spain, October 10, 2018.

Muddy waters rushed down roads, houses were flooded and vehicles piled up on top of each other after the Mediterranean island was pounded with rain in just a few hours, video footage showed.

MADRID-Torrential rainstorms caused flash flooding on the Spanish island of Mallorca, killing at least six people and leaving nine others missing on October 10, authorities said.

Antonia Bauza, the deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc, confirmed two of the victims were British nationals.

Two more bodies were recovered in the town of S'illot, an emergency services spokeswoman who wasn't authorized to be named in media reports told The Associated Press.

The downpours triggered major flash floods, which hurtled through streets in the eastern parts of the island.

Officials have said more than 600 rescuers and medical staff were at work and that emergency relief centres had been set up in sports halls.

"The most important thing right now is to find the missing people and respond to the concerns of their families and to everyone who lives near the affected areas", he told reporters.

Sanchez will be flying to the area later Wednesday, his office said.

Lawmakers held a minute's silence before the weekly prime minister's question time in parliament on Wednesday morning.

Spain's meteorological office warned that rainfall and storms were set to get worse in the archipelago "in the coming hours".
