New Banksy auction confirmed with promise no works will shred or explode

Banksy, a mysterious artist from Bristol, southwest England, rose to fame painting clandestine street murals, typically simple graffiti stencils with a sharp political point, all over the world.

On Oct. 5 in London, seconds after the Sotheby's hammer came down on the sale of a Banksy painting for the equivalent of $1.4 million, the crowd heard a repeated beeping, nearly as though a tiny truck were backing up, and as Girl with Balloon slipped through the bottom, now shredded, onlookers gasped.

Banksy himself captured the moment of shredding on Instagram with a photo captioned "Going, going, gone..."

Alex Branczik is Sotheby's head of contemporary art, Europe, who is quoted by The Art Newspaper as saying "It appears we just got Banksy-ed", after the painting was destroyed.

The video does not show how the shredder was activated, but it is thought to have been set off using some sort of remote control. In 2006 Banksy is known to have visited the wall, and this painting is amongst others that appeared on the wall as a sign of protest, resistance, and of course hope.

Kushner Calls Saudi Prince On Fate Of Jamal Khashoggi
The Washington Post reported Wednesday evening that us intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Khashoggi. He moved to the U.S. more than a year ago, where he continued to comment on his country both in print and on television.

"You'd nearly wonder if he'd recognize the fact that it would've doubled the value of the work", Benrimon adds.

Never had we seen such a scene during an auction.

Various grainy pictures and video clips purporting to show Banksy in the act have surfaced over the years, but no clear conclusion has been reached as to his identity.

But what may come as a surprise to you, is that some art-market watchers said the work could now be worth more in its shredded state, than it was intact. Sotheby's has described the painting as a "framed work, spray paint and acrylic on canvas", and notes that it's "the first time in auction history that a work of art automatically shredded itself".

AUCTION HOUSE: Sotheby's in London auctioned the artwork shredded by Banksy recently.

Orange County-based artist Jeff Gillette, whose 2010 "Dismayland" works portraying a slum surrounding the theme park were included in Banksy's similarly titled project, calls Banksy's newest prank 'brilliant'.
