A 'Swift' Impact: Tenn. voter registration skyrockets after Swift's Instagram endorsement

Swift, 28, has notably stayed out of the USA political fray in contrast to her more vocal peers, like Democrat supporters Katy Perry and Beyonce, and Donald Trump backer Kanye West, who is scheduled to sit down with the President on Thursday.

Swift was previously criticised for not revealing her political allegiance.

"There's going to be a backlash, but I don't think she's going to get totally Dixie Chicked, " Hubbs said. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.

"She weighs every word carefully, but she has to because few artists receive more scrutiny than she does, " said Beverly Keel, chair of the department of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University.

The 10-time-Grammy-winning singer's comments drew praise on the left and derision on the right, including from former Arizona governor Mike Huckabee, who said the move would not make a difference to the election's outcome "unless we allow 13-year-olds to vote".

But in her Instagram post, she pledged her support for two candidates in Tennessee: Phil Bredesen, who is competing in a close Senate race against a Republican candidate supported by Trump, and Rep. Jim Cooper, an incumbent in the Nashville area. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do.

Swift was scheduled to open the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday evening with her first awards show performance in nearly three years, the show announced.

Don't expect this scene to play out again anytime soon, given President Donald Trump's bad blood with Taylor Swift.

"I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about" Blackburn, Trump said.

West said he is bipolar, and also said he's sleep-deprived. "It hurts us because we need to focus on who were are today", he said. West how it felt to be sitting in the Oval Office. "Also, I'm married to a family that does not have a lot of male energy".

In a separate statement, Vote.org acknowledged there were several factors that could have contributed to the surge.

Music superstar Taylor Swift announced Sunday she's voting for Tennessee's Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, breaking her long-standing refusal to discuss anything politics. Tumblr, a social network known for its fostering of intense fandoms, young user base, and generally progressive leanings, is a hive of Swift activity, and one that she is relatively active on.

"Guys, things have gotten so dire that even Taylor Swift had to say something", Takei tweeted.

(According to Vote.org, there was a significant increase in new voter registration after Swift's post, but how much of that was due to the music star is unclear).

In a number of states, the deadline to register to vote is today, October 9th.

Other celebrities have joined in to urge their followers to visit Vote.org, including Rihanna, who Tuesday encouraged her 65 million Instagram followers to register.

But the spike since Swift's Instagram post is unprecedented, Sinel indicated.

"She's a tremendous woman", he said.

West and Swift have been in an on-off public feud since the rapper famously interrupted an acceptance speech she made at the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards.
