Titan M checks to make sure the bootloader is running the right version of Android. And as much as the Pixel camera impresses, the teardown experts confirm that Google is using the same hardware as everyone else i.e. a Sony camera sensor, which in this case is the IMX363. The Verified Boot process they say protects Android from outside tampering. It prevents hackers from attempting to roll back the operating system to an older, potentially vulnerable version of the OS.

Additionally, Google says that it will make its open-source Titan firmware available for the security community to audit in the coming months.

The Titan M chip is also used to verify your lock screen passcode with limits set on logon attempts, as well as preventing access to the secured encrypted flash storage on your phone, with decryption of your data only allowed after the chip successfully verifies your passcode. Importantly, Titan M works with third-party apps to generate and store keys.

As mentioned in the presentation, iFixit identified the Pixel Visual Core to be the same as the one found in its predecessors, while Google has bolstered safety with its Titan M Security chip.

iFixit has taken apart Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL to investigate the devices' components and repairability. These security advantages will help in secure transactions on smartphones, including funds transfers and e-voting, to name a few. Instead, Samsung is the new screen supplier for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

Finally, Google also built Titan M with "insider attack resistance", meaning the firmware can't be updated unless you've entered your passcode, leaving bad actors trying to bypass the lock screen out of luck.
