Caught on Camera: Woman drops off toddler on doorstep, flees

The unidentified woman who abandoned a 2 year old boy on a doorstep Wednesday night has been interviewed and questioned by investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

The person who lives in the house where the unknown woman took the boy said they didn't know who the adult or child was.

The woman knocks on the door before running from the scene to her auto. She's holding a couple of bags in her other hand. When the child did not turn up at the father's house he assumed the mother changed her mind.

It happened about 8 p.m. Wednesday night in Spring, Texas.

While the boy looked around, the woman ran to a vehicle and drove away. He added they initially didn't know the father lived next door because the man wasn't home when police combed the area.

But the friend left the boy on the front step of a random home without waiting for anyone to open the door. The boy was identified by KTRK-TV as Royal Prince Simmons.

Authorities now say the child was abandoned at a stranger's doorstep by a woman who is a friend of his mother, while the mother was in the hospital. Officials at CPS are working to reunite the child with his family, Spencer said.

An investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

The homeowner did not recognize the child or the woman seen in the doorbell surveillance video.

She then rang the doorbell, knocked on the door and sprinted away, leaving the little boy standing clueless in front of the door.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the woman pulled up at the property in a white auto, and that the entire incident lasted just 23 seconds.

Child Protective Services will ultimately decide who will have custody of the child.

The child is in good health, the sheriff's office said. At that time, the father was shown the video and immediately identified the child as his son.

The video contained important clues, including the child's backpack in the shape of a monkey that the woman is seen carrying.
