Child Is First Death In Florida’s Flu Season

A child in Florida has become the first person to die of the flu this season, according to state health officials.

State health officials say the unidentified child died during the week ending October 6, the first week of this year's season, and was otherwise healthy. The child did not receive a flu shot but was healthy before contracting the virus. Eighty percent of the children who died were not vaccinated. The child tested positive for influenza B at a local health care provider.

For the 2018-19 flu season, two deaths in Kansas have already been directly attributed to influenza as of Monday, according to Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports. For example, 30-percent of parents believe the flu shot is a conspiracy and nearly as many believe that it causes autism.

Adding pharmacies in addition to traditional locations (physicians' offices, hospitals) in a more severe epidemic could potentially mitigate up to nearly 24 million symptomatic cases of influenza and could provide cost savings of up to nearly $3 billion in direct medical costs, the authors wrote in Vaccine.

Last season, 336 people in IN died from flu complications. It is unknown whether the woman had underlying health conditions or whether she'd received a flu shot.

The 2017-28 flu season was one of the deadliest in recent memory.

The best way to protect children from influenza is to get them vaccinated.

The state's flu reporting season runs from September 1 to May 31. "This season, influenza vaccines have been updated to better match the circulating strains".

"Basically, everybody 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated", said Brammer.

The Department of Health and Community Services said the number of clinics will increase this year to help improve public access to the vaccine.

"We're happy to have as many options out there as we can get", said Brammer.

Pregnant women can get their vaccines administered anytime during their pregnancies. Flu symptoms include a fever that lasts 3-4 days, body aches, chills, tiredness, cough and headache.
