Three 'pretty big' earthquakes reported in Pacific Ocean off Vancouver Island

Three earthquakes measured at magnitudes of anywhere between 6.5 and 6.8 struck off Vancouver Island on Sunday night.

According to the USGS, the first quake was a 6.6-magnitude.

Geophysicist Amy Vaughan says the three larger quakes ranged from magnitude 6.5 to 6.8 and that there were possibly some smaller ones as well as some aftershocks.

Earthquakes Canada has since downgraded the quake to 6.5-magnitude, with no initial reports of tsunami threats, damage or shaking being felt.

He said: "The Ring of Fire is a girdle of volcanoes and quake zones that circles the Pacific Ocean, and which marks the join between some of the planet's most active tectonic plates". All of the earthquakes struck the same vicinity on the Explore Plate.

Trump accuses Saudis of 'lies' over Khashoggi killing
The Istanbul governor's office approved the protection on Sunday, Turkey's state-run media agency Anadolu reported. But in an interview with The Post late Saturday, Trump conceded that there had been "deception".

There were no reports of damage, and "none would be expected", according to NRC.

The natural disaster had a depth of 46.6km and hit at 10:47am universal time (11.47am BST).

The earthquakes were in a close cluster about between 197 and 223 kilometres west of Port Hardy, all happening within 45 minutes of each other. Hicks tweeted about midnight West Coast time.

The first-of-its kind warning sensors developed by Ocean Networks Canada is installed along the Cascadia subduction zone and when fully operating next March will be able to estimate location and magnitude of a megathrust quake.
