What Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 tells us about three emerging smartphone trends

Years ago some phones used a slide out keyboard to be able to provide a physical keyboard that did not chew up screen space. You can personalize the sliding motion by selecting one of five sliding sounds, if you want, and Xiaomi claims that the sliding design will last for 300,000 cycles.

Before we get around to the phone's front-facing cameras, let's first talk about its rear-facing ones. The main camera setup is similar to the one on the iPhone XS, with a dual, 12-megapixel sensor. That uses a mechanical pop-up mechanism, while the Mi Mix 3 uses a magnetic system instead. With the first two phones designed by Philippe Starck showing the world how much we could extend our screens, the Mi Mix 3 now finally does away with the notch, the chin, and the bezel in entirety.

The phone supports wireless charging, but unlike every other phone that does so, it also comes with a 10W wireless charger in the box.

Xiaomi did tease 5G support for the Mi MIX 3 quite recently, but the models that were introduced today do not offer such support. The phone's 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB models will set you back by RMB 3,599 (~Rs 38,000) and RMB 3,999 (~Rs 42,200), respectively. The phone will make its debut in global markets, starting with India, and we should know more on this front in the coming months. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is one of its kind, well nearly. Basically, this means that the Xiaomi gets closer than ever before to a literally bezel-free unit. Combining video and photo scores, the Mi MIX 3 has a score of 103, the same as the Note 9 and the HTC U12+. There is also an 8GB RAM version that offers up to 256GB of onboard memory. The front gets a 24MP + 2MP dual-camera combo that's hidden underneath a sliding mechanism, while the rear comes with a 12MP f/1.8 + 12MP f/2.4 configuration. Unfortunately, video recording from the primary camera is limited to 30FPS, though that limit can be increased to 60FPS via software update. slow-motion video recording is upped to 960FPS, along with Night Mode, and AI scene detection.

Prices for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will range from 3,299 CNY ($474 USD) to $4,999 ($720 USD). On the front, a 24-megapixel Sony sensor is paired with a 2-megapixel camera that will provide bokeh effects to selfies. As expected, the smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor.

Earlier this week, Xiaomi announced the Black Shark Helo gaming phone and now its back with another flagship smartphone - Mi Mix 3 that was just launched in an event in Beijing.
