Pompeo, Brazilian president-elect speak over phone on ties, Venezuela

In one of his first television interviews since being elected on Sunday with almost 58mn votes, the former paratrooper, who is notorious for his inflammatory rhetoric, did little to suggest he would temper his discourse after taking power on January 1. He called refugees fleeing to Europe "human waste", raising eyebrows in African and Middle Eastern countries, and irritated China by visiting Taiwan, which Beijing considers to be a breakaway province. He said he preferred to "focus on the relationships and bilateral agreements".

The 63-year-old congressman´s rise has been propelled by rejection of the leftist PT that ran Brazil for 13 of the last 15 years and was ousted two years ago in the midst of a deep recession and political graft scandal.

"The future president must respect institutions, must respect democracy, the rule of law, the judiciary branch, the national Congress and the legislative branch", Toffoli said in remarks many took to be a rebuke of Bolsonaro.

"Picture German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is a voice for moderation in the world".

With Bolsonaro like Trump holding the global body in low esteem, it is unlikely he will prioritize the Security Council, Velasco said. "Adding troubles will only make it worse".

Investors were quick to cheer Bolsonaro's victory, sending Brazil's benchmark Bovespa stock index to an all-time high in early trading before turning negative as traders booked profits following a sharp rally this month. "They are buying Brazil itself".

And Bolsonaro shares Trump's assertive pushback against a rising China.

"I hope he will change Brazil and give us security, education and health", Andre Barbosa, a gay accountant from Rio De Janeiro said.

Oil drops as wave of supply meets global economic gloom
US President Trump has made various comments suggesting that OPEC should up its output quotas and help lower the price of oil. Right now, however, oil prices look set to continue moving lower, until any fresh developments alter that course.

But Tang also warned that China could retaliate if the rhetoric is not softened.

"Mr. Xi could decide not to come if he doesn't feel welcome", Tang said.

Rosangela Wolff Moro, a lawyer married to the judge, has repeatedly suggested in her Instagram profile that she supported Bolsonaro against left-leaning Fernando Haddad, who was named the Workers' Party candidate after da Silva was barred by electoral authorities over his imprisonment.

How that tough talk might translate into policy is not clear.

It said the biggest risks facing Brazil are abandoning the budget-cutting reforms launched by outgoing President Michel Temer, or a downturn in external conditions for emerging markets.

On Wednesday, the former army captain said on Twitter that Marcos Pontes, a Brazilian astronaut who was the country's first person in space, would be his minister for science and technology.

In the run-up to the election, Bolsonaro, whose first foreign visits would be to Chile, Israel and the United States - that according to him "share our worldview" - has said: "The future ministry will come from the productive sector".

"There will be people to advise him on the impacts and he will listen", he said.
