Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall begin tour of The Gambia

The main reason for the visit is to strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom and would highlight key themes within the Commonwealth of Nations.

"You realise, I've literally done this because I am programmed to do it because my father did it and actually we should all be doing it".

Ahead of the visit, Prince Charles said he was delighted to be returning to Ghana which he first visited more than 40 years ago.

Sporting what is gradually becoming his trademark, a long-sleeved shirt, made from a kente designed African print, President Akufo-Addo said Ghana was concerned about post-Brexit. So we are very happy to have you here.

The royal pair will fly to Ghana on Friday and to Nigeria on November 6. "Some of them were happy, some of them not so happy".

He said: "He's done an wonderful job without telling us what we should be doing or what direction we should be going".

Prince Charles will meet with local policymakers to discuss renovations and reuse of the historic landmark, which will be in part of redevelopment efforts of Accra's waterfront.

"This will be the first visit to The Gambia for us both although we have heard so many wonderful things about the beauty of its natural environment and the resilience of its people".

The BBC was given exclusive access to Prince Charles over the last 12 months to film Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.

Now that the whirlwind first tour for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has come to an end (quickest 16 days ever?), fans of the royal family have turned their attention back to London, England.

Prince Charles will also attend a meeting with Ghanaian and worldwide business leaders to discuss sustainable practice in Ghana's cocoa industry and key environmental issues.

Meanwhile, the Duchess, who is President of the Women of the World Festival, would attend an event featuring Ghana's top female leaders.
