Rona and Lowe's stores to close in northeastern Ontario

Lowe's is closing 51 of its home improvement stores, including 30 in Canada, the company said Monday.

Nine store closures are expected across Ontario, including one in Sudbury.

Sylvain Prud'homme, chief executive of Lowe's Canada, did not say how many employees would be affected by the closures, but said the changes will allow the company to improve collaboration between its banners to better serve customers.

The list of other US stores closing include locations in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Lowe's opened its Northern Avenue location in 2015 after renovations were completed on the former Zellers spot. Lowe's is in the process of closing all 99 Orchard Supply stores - which are in California, Oregon and Florida - as well as a distribution center, by the end of the year.

The stores will be closed before February 1, 2019.

"The store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business", Ellison said in a statement.

Lowe's will have store closing sales at most of the locations to get rid of inventory. None of the US stores to close are in the Carolinas, according to the list posted on Lowe's website.
