Dead, Including Sheriff’s Sergeant and Gunman, in Shooting at Thousand Oaks Bar

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Thousand Oaks, Calif. on Thursday to honor fallen Ventura County Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who was killed while responding to a mass shooting at a bar overnight. According to AP, Ventura County Sheriff's Office Captain Garo Kuredjian said the first reports of shots fired came around 11:20 pm and the authorities are still treating it as "a very active scene". The CHP officer retreated, secured the perimeter and then pulled Helus out of the line of fire, KCAL reported.

He and the CHP officer went inside, according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean, who held an emotional news conference outside the bar early Thursday morning.

While authorities have not named all 12 victims in the shooting, a father of one person who died identified his 22-year-old son as among those who were killed.

"He was totally committed, he gave his all", Sheriff Dean continued, "and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero".

At least a dozen people were killed - including a "hero" cop who was due to retire next year and died bravely trying to save others' lives. Helus had worked some drug-investigation assignments and also had served many years on a SWAT team, Buschow said.

The suspected gunman was reportedly found dead inside the bar and police have not yet revealed the motives for the shooting. They say the gunman did not say anything. No other information on them was immediately known.

Patrons threw barstools through windows in a desperate attempt to escape a gunman at a country-and-western bar in southern California late Wednesday.

"We're still looking for the shooter", Kuredjian said.

"We can confirm that there are several people that have been injured inside the bar and grill, including one deputy sheriff that was transported" to a local hospital, he said.

A law enforcement officer said the suspect used a.45-caliber handgun, created to hold a magazine of 10 rounds.
