Macron Delivers Rebuke to Nationalism as Trump Looks On

In the presence of US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and dozens of princes, monarchs, presidents and prime ministers, Macron also talked about patriotism and nationalism.

Trump later Sunday was to visit the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial in the suburbs of Paris, where he will deliver Veterans Day remarks before returning to Washington. "They are ready to wreak chaos and death".

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: Nationalism is treason", Macron said, according to a Euronews translator.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco fell asleep during French President Emmanuel Macron's Armistice Day speech in Paris.

The U.S. president set the tone for his trip by blasting Macron for "very insulting" comments advocating a more integrated European security, and was then roundly criticized for skipping a planned visit to a U.S. military ceremony because of bad weather. Trump and Putin arrived slightly later in separate motorcades.

France was the epicenter of the first global conflict.

"France was shown as the bearer of universal values during these dark hours, as the very opposite of a selfish nation that only looks after its own interest", Mr Macron said, using language that seemed to target Mr Trump's America First policies. Trump is scheduled to visit another military cemetery before departing Sunday.

The commemoration is the centrepiece of global tributes to honour those who perished during the 1914-18 war and to commemorate the signing of the Armistice that brought the fighting to an end at 11 a.m. on Nov 11, 1918.

Most notoriously, Trump has repeatedly put himself at odds with practically the entire U.S. political and security establishment over Russian meddling in the 2016 Presidential Election.

Israel's military had not confirmed those details nor described what type of operation it carried out. He had been attending remembrance events marking the centenary of the end of world war one.

Putin upstaged Trump by arriving at the ceremony last, after the American president and his wife had entered and Macron and other world leaders came together on buses.

Donald Trump was heavily criticised on Saturday after he cancelled a planned visit to honour United States soldiers killed in the conflict, apparently because rain had grounded his helicopter. She had slogans, including the words "Fake" and "Peace", written on her chest.

A topless French protester also managed to dodge police and ran up to Mr Trump's motorcade in Paris, before she was pulled away by officers.

Asked in late October what he meant when he described himself as a nationalist, Trump cited his love of the country and said it was about putting it first economically.

"I want to speak of my concerns that are mixed in with today's commemoration, the concern that national blinders are spreading again, that actions are taken as if to simply ignore our mutual dependencies, relationships and binding ties", Dr Merkel said.

In Russia, while President Putin joined world leaders in Paris, commemoration services were being held across the country.

The UK government has invited 10,000 members of the public to march past the Cenotaph in a "People's Procession" to give thanks and pay their respects to all who served in World War I. It has also called for bells to be rung across the nation and around the world to replicate the spontaneous ringing of bells across Britain on November 11, 1918 as news of the war's end spread.

Remembered for brutal trench warfare and the first use of chemical weapons, WWI pitted the armies of France, the British empire, Russian Federation and the USA against a German-led coalition that included the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires.
