9.8 crore Indians may be diabetic by 2030, says Study Findings

Using data from the International Diabetes Federation and 14 cohort studies (representing more than 60% of the world population with type 2 diabetes), researchers estimated the burden of type 2 diabetes in 221 countries and territories between 2018 and 2030.

By 2030, 79 million adults with type 2 diabetes are expected to need insulin to manage their condition and if current levels of access remain, only half of them will be able to be able to get an adequate supply, according to CNN.

The Guardian quoted Dr Sanjay Basu from Stanford University in the U.S., who led the research, as saying the current levels of insulin access are inadequate specially in Africa and Asia, requiring more efforts to overcome this shortage. It means 98 million Indians will suffer from type-2 diabetes.

A few months ago, another study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado had revealed that methyldopa, a common drug used to treat hypertension could prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Sanjay Basu, assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University and who led the study, said: "Despite the UN's commitment to treat noncommunicable diseases and ensure universal access to drugs for diabetes, across much of the world insulin is scarce and unnecessarily hard for patients to access".

Dr. Hertzel Gerstein of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, wrote in an accompanying commentary that it was important to estimate and ensure insulin supplies, but added that the forecasts should be treated cautiously as they were based on mathematical models.

The study predicts that African, Asian, and Oceania regions will not get the proper amount of insulin in 2030 if the access remains at current levels.

The study underscores the significance of handling hindrances in the insulin market, especially in Africa.

"In spite of the UN's promise to treat non-communicable illness and guarantee global access to drugs for diabetes, over most part of the world insulin is rare and superfluously troublesome for patients to have an access". Between 2002 and 2013, the price of insulin tripled although there were only minimal increases in costs associated with the development of the treatment. Unless governments commence inventiveness to make insulin accessible and economical, then its application is going to be far from appropriate.

The researchers warn that strategies to make insulin more widely available and affordable will be critical to ensure that demand is met.
