Locals walk-off turkey weight in search of Christmas trees

High Country Christmas Trees said that it's been bringing Christmas to Huntsville, North Carolina, for the last 35 years.

The tight market is rooted in an oversupply followed by the Great Recession that caused many growers to leave the business. But due to an ongoing tree shortage, officials said they had to change the vendors they use to bring the trees to their lot.

"Last year was bad; this year is disgusting", said Chris Winkler, 53, co-owner of Holiday Sale tent on SW 104th St.in Kendall, who has been selling Christmas trees with his family in Miami for more than 40 years.

Officials told the AP large retailers "are doing just fine", but the smaller organizations - like the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County - may be left to deal with a shortage.

Sonny Panzico sells Christmas trees too, and he says the shortage is hiking up prices.

For decades, the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County has been selling real Christmas trees locally and this year is no different.

The 18-year-old victim remains in a hospital in serious condition, while the 12-year-old girl, an innocent bystander, was stable. Investigators now believed there were more than two people involved in the initial fight that took place prior to the shooting.

"It's probably been one of the hardest year for us to get our trees of all the years I've been here", Oakes said.

Then again, there were hundreds of trees arranged outside, with more sitting in refrigerated tractor trailers behind the sales area for a total of 702 trees in their lot Friday.

"We're now seeing the third generation", Adams said, describing how some people came to pick out a tree when Danville Farms first opened in 1982 and are now returning with their children and grandchildren to continue the tradition.

"They're biodegradable and re-plantable", said Reese.

That's when Christmas tree prices tend to be the most expensive, according to a new report from the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) and Square.

With the lean supply, shoppers might want to start early if they want a lot of choice and variety.

"This tree caught my eye, it's so full", she said.
