Former US President George Bush dies at age 94, family spokesman says

George H.W. Bush, who died November 30, 2018 at the age of 94, served the government in various roles before he was elected president in 1988.

The former president, who served as a USA naval aviator during World War Two, had attended his wife's funeral in Houston in a wheelchair and wore a pair of colorful socks festooned with books, in honor of his late wife's commitment to literacy.

On Friday Obama, the 44th president, said in a statement that America had "lost a patriot and humble servant".

In the 1988 presidential race, Bush and his running mate, Indiana Sen.

George Bush Sr, as he was known, passed away on Friday evening, a statement said on behalf of the family.

In August 2015, Trump tweeted a dig at the presidency of George H.W. Bush, writing: "The last thing we need is another Bush in the White House".

After winning United Nations support and a green light from a reluctant Congress, Bush unleashed a punishing air war against Iraq and a five-day ground juggernaut that sent Iraqi forces reeling in disarray back to Baghdad.

The couple had four sons - Neil, Marvin, the future president George W. and the presidential candidate and Florida governor Jeb - and two daughters, Dorothy and Robin, who died at age 3.

One of his grandsons, George P Bush, says George HW Bush was the "greatest man I ever knew".

In 2011, Obama awarded Bush the highest USA civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Bush's passing comes scant months after the death of his wife and first lady Barbara Bush - his "most beloved woman in the world" - to whom he was married for 73 years.

During his time as president, the Berlin Wall fell, the Soviet Union and communism collapsed, and the Cold War ended.

In a statement, he added: "The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens".

He had spent every summer in the seaside town since childhood, except during World War II while he was a naval aviator.

"I think Dad got sick on objective so that he could be with her", Jeb Bush said during his eulogy to his mother.

Mr Gorbachev worked closely with Mr Bush to bring an end to the Cold War in the late 1980s and 1990s, and lauded the former president for his abilities as a politician as well as his personal character. It was perhaps the high point of Bush's presidency, his approval rating among US voters reaching a record 89 percent, with a fireworks display lighting the night-time sky over Washington to salute the successful mission. "Our thoughts are with the entire Bush family tonight - and all who were inspired by George and Barbara's example".

He flew 58 missions off carriers in World War Two and survived being shot down over the Pacific.

George Herbert Walker Bush served just one term as United States president, but few occupants of the Oval Office could have felt history shifting so sharply under their feet.
