Mueller investigation: No jail time sought for Trump ex-adviser Michael Flynn

Mueller investigation: No jail time sought for Trump ex-adviser Michael Flynn

Special counsel Mueller is expected to file a sentencing memo today for Michael Flynn and sentencing memos for Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort in the coming days. In late 2016, the two allegedly spoke about the USA sanctions imposed on Russian Federation. Next was "the Special Counsel's Office's ("SCO") investigation concerning any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald J. Trump", followed by about one and a quarter lines of more redactions.

Mr Flynn has admitted one count of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Flynn was under investigation by the Justice Department for that work when he became national security adviser.

Questions also have been raised about the Flynn plea itself, considering a congressional Republican report earlier this year claimed fired Federal Bureau of Investigation boss James Comey once testified that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents did not think Flynn intentionally lied.

The president again accused Cohen of lying about making false statements to lawmakers so he could get a reduced sentence.

The fact that the special counsel recommended that Flynn not be incarcerated doesn't suggest that his crime was unimportant.

For the Russia investigation, the filing said Flynn provided "content and context" of interactions that the Trump transition team had with Russian officials regarding sanctions that the Obama administration sought to impose at the end of 2016, as well as a vote on a United Nations Security Council resolution about Israel. According to the filing, Flynn has been cooperating in "several ongoing investigations". The plea deal said Flynn's cooperation may include answering questions, taking government-administered polygraph examinations, providing sworn statements and participating in "covert law enforcement activities".

In the same document, he goes further than in documents released last week by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III's office in which Cohen admitted to lying to Congress about his work on behalf of Trump when he was a candidate as he tried to secure approval for a hotel project in Moscow.

Cohen admitted he lied to Congress when he said efforts to pursue the Moscow real estate ended in January 2016, when they actually continued until June 2016, after Trump had clinched the Republican presidential nomination.

Cohen's plea agreement prompted Trump to attack his former attorney and Mueller in a series of tweets.

Two other Mueller defendants who also pleaded guilty to making false statements, Alex van der Zwaan and George Papadopoulos, both had to serve prison time. He is now serving a 14-day prison sentence.

In a series of tweets on Monday, Trump accused Cohen of co-operating with federal prosecutors in the Russian Federation probe in exchange for a reduced sentence on unrelated tax fraud and campaign finance charges.
