White House chief of staff John Kelly expected to step down soon

Seventeen months in, Kelly and President Donald Trump have reached a stalemate in their relationship and it is no longer seen as tenable by either party.

He is also expected to host a dinner with senior White House staff, including Kelly, when he returns from Missouri on Friday night.

Trump had nothing but praise for the two new Cabinet members who he announced Friday he would nominate.

Trump is further expected to announce Heather Nauert as the new USA ambassador to the United Nations on Friday, replacing Nikki Haley. "It's not his strength", Trump said.

"Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence's top aide and a longtime Republican political operative, is the likely replacement for Mr. Kelly, these people say".

White House chief of staff John Kelly - who is expected to call it quits in the days ahead - was interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller's team, CNN reported Friday, citing a trio of sources.

Trump also announced that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert is his pick to replace Nikki Haley as the next USA ambassador to the United Nations, and he said he'd have another announcement Saturday about the military's top brass.

Most of the other witnesses interviewed were connected to Trump's campaign, but Kelly didn't join the administration until after the president was sworn in in January 2017.

"She's very talented, very smart, very quick, and I think she's going to be respected by all", Trump said. Kelly took part in at least four Oval Office meetings with Trump on Thursday.

Kelly, too, has made no secret of the trials of his job and has often joked about how working for Trump was harder than anything he'd done before, including on the battlefield.
