Yemen peace talks to start December 6 in Sweden

Abu Dhabi - Proposed UN-led talks in Sweden mark a "critical opportunity" to bring peace to Yemen, a top Emirati official said Tuesday.

A previous attempt by Griffiths to hold UN-sponsored talks in Geneva collapsed in September when the rebels failed to appear.

The US Senate is due to consider this week a resolution to end support for the conflict, seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and its arch-foe in the Middle East, Iran.

His arrival coincided with the evacuation of a number of wounded Houthis from the capital to Muscat, Oman.

"Tehran is ready to help global talks to end the crisis and underlines the importance of accelerating providing humanitarian aid to the people", Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Although no official date for the negotiations has been set, government officials say they may begin on either Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Riyadh/Aden - Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid Bin Salman said on Wednesday that the Arab Coalition was and continues to remain committed to a political solution in Yemen despite the pro-Iranian militias' procrastination.

The coalition agreed to a United Nations request to facilitate the evacuation of 50 wounded Houthis "for humanitarian considerations and as part of confidence-building measures" ahead of the talks, spokesman Turki al-Malki said.

The oil-rich Gulf emirate, which has been a mediator in the devastating conflict, hosted Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom for talks in Kuwait City on Monday.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's Foreign Ministry seizes the opportunity here to express its readiness to establish cooperation with the global community to immediately resolve the Yemen crisis.

A Cairo-based Western diplomat echoed the words of other regional and Western diplomats in recent weeks by stressing that the U.S. and the European Union are pushing Riyadh and Abu Dhabi to end the war quickly in the face of growing worldwide outrage at the images of starvation and disease coming out of devastated Yemen.

On Tuesday, as Griffiths and the Houthis were making their way to Stockholm, Sweden was preparing to receive the delegation from the Hadi regime.

"A lot of it has to do with the diplomatic pressure because of the murder of a US-based Saudi journalist and the anger that is generated in Congress and also other countries that are refusing.to sell them (the Saudis) weapons", he said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, however, has played down the early December schedule and said he hoped talks would start "this year".

"It's not much, but given the humanitarian situation and toxic political atmosphere now prevalent in Yemen, it's better than nothing".

The opposing sides cautiously reiterated their willingness to attend negotiations.

Regional diplomats are no less sceptical.

Prospects for convening talks have risen as Western allies press Saudi Arabia, leader of the alliance battling the Iranian-aligned Houthis, over a war that has killed more than 10,000 people and pushed Yemen to the brink of starvation.
