There are four emergency call centers now operated by State Police in Mass. and residents using a cellphone to call 911 should call one of these centers instead, State Police advised.

A nationwide CenturyLink outage is affecting emergency call services for some people in western Washington on Thursday. The Federal Communications Commission was investigating the CenturyLink outage, Chairman Ajit Pai announced Friday.

"On Friday morning, some agencies, including the King County Sheriff" s Office, reported that 911 telephone services had recovered as of approximately 8:30 a.m.

Nationwide internet outage affects CenturyLink
It's unclear what's caused the outage, or why it's stretched to now more than 12 hours. Cellphone 911 services in parts of western Washington state were also impacted.

CenturyLink customers in Utah and around the nation are reporting services are not working Thursday.

The Idaho Statesman reports that the internet problems led to the temporary shutdown of phone services at the Idaho Department of Correction and the state's Department of Education. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused customers.

CenturyLink posted several times via Facebook that it was working to solve the issue.

"When an emergency strikes, it's critical that Americans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help". He called the outage "particularly troubling" in its "breadth and duration", according to a statement he tweeted Friday morning. However, this technical issue was different from others because CenturyLink is one of the main providers of internet and telephony connections to numerous US' 911 emergency call centers.
