Experts Say These Diets Are The Most Successful For Losing Weight

Another diet based on a healthy region of the world, the Mediterranean diet, holds the top overall spot this year for the first time in U.S. News and World Report's rankings. It consists of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like those found in olive oil and fatty fish like salmon and sardines, and nuts and seeds.

For its rankings, U.S. News and World Report evaluated 41 different diets on factors like weight loss and diet's effectiveness against diseases. The most successful diet is one that you can stick to.

This plant-heavy diet focuses on adding five food groups - "new meat", fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and sugar and spices - to your diet, instead of taking foods away. Because of new research regarding the Mediterranean diet, such as findings that it could lower the risk of dementia and aggressive prostate cancer, it took the lead for 2019. It's more flexible than fully vegetarian or vegan diets.

"These diets that are consistently top performers are scoring well, from nutrition to helpfulness, ease, ability to help prevent chronic conditions and more", Haupt said.

Unlike highly restrictive diets like the keto diet or the Atkins diet, the Mediterranean diet is balanced and allows people to eat a wide variety of foods in moderation.

The plan focuses on fruit, vegetables, whole grain, lean protein and low-fat dairy and eliminates foods high in fat and sugar-sweetened drinks and candies, according to U.S. News and World Report.

"I wish though, that we weren't so obsessed with weight loss and diets, per se".

Doctors say healthy weight loss is just one to two pounds per week. It assigns points aiming for nutritious foods with fewer calories. The plan also involves in-person meetings or online chats created to support those in the program and keep them accountable.

But the diet topping any list isn't necessarily the best diet for you.

Lack of scientific evidence for health benefits and severe restriction of foods - including certain healthy foods - were listed as reasons for low scores.
