IL is among top states for outbound moves

A new study shows New Jersey had the highest percentage of outbound moves in 2018.

"The Northeast region continues to see more residents leaving than moving in, with 57 percent of all moves within the Northeast US being outbound moves", the company said. Kansas's "outbound" trend for 2018 jumped by 2 percent from 2017, but is down by about 1 percent from 2016.

The study cites that the main reason people left the Garden State was for job opportunities. Other Midwestern states in the top 10 for outbound migration were Kansas (58.7 percent), OH (56.5 percent), Iowa (55.5 percent) and MI (55 percent).

The study found that the state with the highest percentage of inbound migration was Vermont (72.6 percent), with 234 total moves.

Atlas determined that the Midwest had the most outbound moves of any region in the USA, with Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota ranking in the top 10.

Compared to all other states, Idaho saw the largest influx of new residents desiring a lifestyle change (25.95 percent), and more people flocked to New Mexico for retirement than any other state (42.74 percent).

MI had 4,223 shipments from United Van Lines previous year, according to information from the company. Arizona 6. SC 7.

Pennsylvania, meanwhile, had slightly more inbound movers - 52.1 percent - than outbound - 47.9 percent. According to the study, most outbound movers were leaving the state for job-related reasons. New Jersey and Scotch Plains have the highest taxes in the nation.

Since 1977, United Van Lines has annually tracked migration patterns on a state-by-state basis.
