Chang'e-4: Chinese rover now exploring Moon

It is among a slew of ambitious Chinese targets, which include a reusable launcher by 2021, a super-powerful rocket capable of delivering payloads heavier than those NASA and private rocket firm SpaceX can handle, a moon base, a permanently crewed space station, and a Mars rover.

The United States and the Soviet Union have made a "soft landing" on the moon - China landed a rover there in 2013 - but no other country has touched down on the dark side of the moon, which always faces away from the Earth.

At 10:26 Beijing time (02:26 GMT), January 3, China achieved a world first when it landed its Chang'e 4 probe in the South Pole-Aitken Basin of the moon.

The photo of the rover was sent via the Queqiao (Magpie Bridge) satellite, which was blasted into the moon's orbit in May to relay data and commands between the lander and Earth.

The craft's rover, called Yutu 2, has started to make its way across the lunar surface.

The Jade Rabbit 2 rover has six wheels that all have power, so it can continue to operate even if one wheel fails. Its maximum speed is 200 metres per hour. It can climb a 20-degree hill or an obstacle up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall.

Emma Stone apologises for 'white-washed' role at Golden Globes 2019
Although the cameras don't show her face during this moment, it's been confirmed that it was she who shouted it out. In an interview with news.com.au the year the film was released, Stone said, "I've become the butt of many jokes ".

In Chinese folklore, Yutu is the white pet rabbit of Chang'e, the moon goddess who lent her name to the Chinese lunar mission.

The rover and lander are carrying instruments to analyse the unexplored region's geology.

Unlike the near side of the moon, which offers many flat areas to touch down on, the far side is mountainous and rugged.

It's also a major first step for China's future lunar missions and bigger space ambitions.

The far side is often referred to as the "dark side" because it can not be seen from Earth and is relatively unknown.

"Since the far side of the moon is shielded from electromagnetic interference from the Earth, it's an ideal place to research the space environment and solar bursts, and the probe can "listen" to the deeper reaches of the cosmos", Tongjie Liu, deputy director of the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center for the China National Space Administration, told CNN. Chang'e 4 will study its terrain.
