GitHub makes private repositories available for free

To date, private repositories on the service required users to pay $7 a month for a personal developer account.

Microsoft announced a change in GitHub pricing today, and it's great for anyone learning to code.

Microsoft-owned GitHub just gave coders the ability to create unlimited, free programming projects, according to a blog post by GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.

If you're using a free account on GitHub, you're now able to create and share private software projects. Even after landing your first developer job, when it comes time to move on or work on a side project, you might not want to have your work out in the open for your current employer to see. Using GitHub Connect, they can be securely linked to work across both environments. One restriction is that you can only have up to three collaborators per repository for free. And truth is, most of the independent projects on GitHub are mostly personal projects that are either not fully developed or left behind by the developer.

For the uninitiated, Bajirao Mastani starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone was helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Akshay Kumar's Kesari will be his first release in 2019 and the movie pays tribute to the martyrs of Saragarhi.

In a further sign of potential parent company synergy, GitHub said devs can now create pull requests directly from GitHub Pull Requests, an extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code, the Windows maker's Electron-based cross-platform code editor. Instead of offering GitHub Enterprise Cloud and GitHub Enterprise Service as separate services, Microsoft is rolling them into one: GitHub Enterprise.

Overall these changes should help GitHub continue to develop a healthy ecosystem of users.

If the limit on collaborators gets in the way, you can upgrade to a "Pro" account to invite an unlimited number of collaborators and get access to advanced code review tools.
