Again, Ghana, Chad, others beat Nigeria on strength of passport ranking

The Ghanaian passport has been ranked 77th strongest in a world ranking of passports which was dominated by Asian countries.

According to the Henley Passport Index, which periodically measures the access each country's travel document affords, Japan retained its top spot as the world's most travel-friendly passport due to the document's access to 190 countries, CNN reported on Wednesday. In 2017, the country was ranked 85th, with citizens able to access just 51 destinations.

European countries also performed favorably, with European Union member states (along with Norway and the US) filling in the places behind the top three nations - although the United Kingdom continues to drop down the rankings, along with the US. It analyses how many countries a passport holder can enter visa-free or on a visa-on-arrival basis.

The world's 'most powerful passport' has been revealed as the UK's ranking continues to fall.

Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Sweden now hold joint fourth place, while Spain and Luxembourg are in 5th. We mean that according to the latest Henley Passport Index, the Irish passport is one of the best you can have, using their metric of visa-on-arrival travel across the globe.

Further down the list, North Korea ranks in 96th place, along with Iran and Ethiopia, . whose citizens can travel visa-free to 42 countries.

Meanwhile, expectations for a nationwide decline in United States crude inventories alleviated worries about a supply glut. Oil has gained almost 12 per cent since last Monday, its biggest week-on-week rally since early December 2016.

The Group Chairman for Henley and Partners, Christian Kalin, says that despite some trends towards isolationism, most countries in the world remain committed to collaboration and supporting a proactive approach to foreign affairs, which includes investing in "international mobility".

Irish passport holders can go to 184 destinations visa-free, but require a visa before travelling to 42 locations. Now, Ukrainians are allowed visa-free travel to 128 countries, whereas a year ago the number was 114.

The least powerful passports in the world for 2019 were Iraq and Afghanistan which came in 104th place with access to just 30 countries.

The US and the United Kingdom continue to drop down the Henley Passport Index - which is based on authoritative data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) - and now sit in joint 6th place, with access to 185 destinations.

"South Korea and the United Arab Emirates' recent ascent in the rankings are further examples of what happens when countries take a proactive foreign affairs approach, an attitude which significantly benefits their citizens as well as the worldwide community".
