As US growth slows, Trump could become even more unpredictable

A member of the USA trade delegation to China, carries a folder as he leaves a hotel in Beijing, Jan. 7, 2019. "But for China, its very serious", she said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang confirmed during a press conference later that day that the USA sent a vessel into the area "without permission from the Chinese side".

Mnuchin has been a more moderate voice in trade talk discussions, with reports indicating he's against the trade war between the two countries, whereas U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his deputy Jeffrey Gerrish view the need for a tougher stance on China and trade.

In a sign the meeting was off to a good start, China's economic czar, Vice Premier Liu He, dropped by the talks on Monday to encourage the negotiators.

The operation came as Chinese and U.S. officials kicked off talks in Beijing to find a solution to a bitter trade war that prompted the two sides to impose tariffs previous year on more than $300 billion in total two-way trade.

There was no immediate USA response to the Chinese complaint.

Since the two presidents met on December 1, China has made a number of concessions to USA demands, including temporarily cutting punitive tariffs on US -made cars, resuming soybean purchases, promising to open up its markets for more foreign investment, and drafting a law to prevent forced technology transfers. The Chinese navy's Southern Theater Command is tasked with enforcing Beijing's claims to the vast South China Sea.

Sears has reached a final hour deal to stay in business
Any deal would require the Bankruptcy Court's approval and a hearing to approve the auction results has been set for January 31. Under changes in the bid reached in negotiations, he will have until Wednesday afternoon to make a $120 million cash payment.

"Talks with China are going very well!" president Trump declared Tuesday, a day after the in-person talks in Beijing began with the participation of vice premier Liu and the US trade delegation.

The U.S. negotiators in Beijing are pushing the Chinese side to come up with a mechanism to ensure that Beijing keeps the promises it makes, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Liu's appearance at the talks is a "symbol of Xi's personal buy-in" in the effort to reach a deal, said Leland Miller, chief executive officer of China Beige Book, a data-analytics firm that surveys companies across the Chinese economy. These include expanded Chinese purchases of American products, greater protections for United States intellectual property, constraints on Chinese industrial policy, and enforcement and verification of follow-through by China. "Beijing wants to show this is supported at the very highest level".

China and US officials started negotiations Monday in the first face-to-face meetings since Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping agreed in early December on a 90-day truce. "We have lodged stern representations with the USA side".

China's foreign ministry on Monday confirmed that Wang would deliver a keynote speech at Davos, though didn't confirm any plans for him to meet Trump.

The American delegation is led by a deputy USA trade representative, Jeffrey D. Gerrish, and includes agriculture, energy, commerce, treasury and State Department officials.

The White House is making sure this go-around is different.
