Julian Castro, Former Housing Secretary, Announces 2020 Presidential Bid

Julian Castro, the former San Antonio mayor and Obama administration housing secretary, slammed President Donald Trump's policy of separating families at the southern USA border a day after announcing his 2020 White House bid, highlighting what is likely to be a principal issue in his campaign.

"When my grandmother got here nearly 100 years ago, I'm sure she never could have imagined that just two generations later..."

"As the former mayor of the fifth-largest city in the country and cabinet secretary, there is no doubt in my mind that Secretary Castro has the right temperament and experience to be president of the United States", Allred said.

He spoke from a podium that featured his campaign logo - his first name, with an emphasis on its accent - and greeted supporters with mariachi music.

Two senior Democratic politicians have announced that they will challenge for the United States presidency in 2020.

In 2014, President Barack Obama chose Castro to run HUD. But Hillary Clinton passed on naming him her running mate in 2016.

"I am not a front runner in this race, but I have not been a front runner at any time in my life", he said.Mr. Castro, who tapped his twin brother, Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro, to serve as his campaign chairman, drew headlines last week for bringing up the possibility of a 90 percent tax rate on the wealthiest Americans.

He cited President Trump's visit this week to the border city of McAllen, Tex., and his claim that there was an "invasion" at the border and a "national security crisis".

Until now only former congressman John Delaney has formally launched a campaign, more than a year ago. Some group leaders also said that as agency chief, "Castro has done too much to help private equity firms like Blackstone, instead of black and Latino communities".

Trump says he knew nothing about Manafort's dealings with Russian
Manafort has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in Washington and faces sentencing in a separate case in Virginia. Jackson also said she'd review all the filings before deciding whether to hold a January 25 hearing on the issue.

Other potential candidates, such as Massachusetts Sen. Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke is doing little to dim speculation that he might jump into a field that has no clear front-runner.

"When my grandmother got here nearly a hundred years ago, I'm sure she never could have imagined that just two generations later, one of her grandsons would be serving as a member of the United States Congress and the other would be standing with you here today to say these words: I am a candidate for President of the United States of America", he said at the rally.

Since announcing formation of an exploratory committee in December, Mr Castro has begun to stake out positions on policy debates that will dominate the nominating contests that kick off early next year.

He would also become the third prominent Latino presidential candidate in four years, after Republican senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio fought Trump for their party's nomination in 2016.

"Look around this neighborhood, there are no frontrunners born here, but I've always believed that with big dreams and hard work, anything is possible".

Castro comes from a family of politicians and activist.

In his remarks, portions of which were delivered in both English and Spanish, Castro said he was compelled to run out of a desire to preserve the "opportunities" that made families like his flourish.

Castro, however, may not be the only Texan in the race.

Like other Democrats running, Castro has said he will not accept money from political action committees tied to corporations and unions, and he has sought to introduce himself to voters as a champion for universal health care and affordable housing.
