Super blood moon has Northlanders transfixed

The full Moon appeared bigger than normal because it was closer to the Earth - about 222,000 miles (358,000 kilometres) away - earning it the nickname "super Moon".

Skywatchers wowed by the spectacular "blood moon" eclipse Sunday (Jan. 20) are probably asking, "When do we get an encore?"

NASA estimates there will be 85 total lunar eclipses this century.

A variety of factors affect the appearance of the moon during a total lunar eclipse.

The eclipse lasted about three hours: during the first hour the full moon was gradually swallowed up by the shadow of the Earth, then an hour of total eclipse where it was not invisible but instead appeared tinted in hues of red, orange and pink, followed finally by its full reemergence, bright and shining. The term "penumbral" refers to a situation in which the moon just skirts into the lightest part of the Earth's shadow, meaning the eclipse is just barely visible.

Risky cold continues: Wind chill advisory in effect tonight
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Warning for Sullivan County and the upper parts of the Hudson Valley. Snow accumulations to our north and west may total 3 to 7-inches before this is over Wednesday .

The Reuters news agency reported, "The best viewing of the one-hour total eclipse was from North and South America, with as many as 2.8 billion people able to see it from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, West Africa and northernmost Russian Federation". A full moon occurs every 29.5 days when Earth is directly aligned between the sun and the moon.

The rare celestial event, which occurs when sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere lights up the moon and seems to turn it red, was visible in North and South America, western Africa, and in parts of Europe.

The depth of the deep blood red varies during each eclipse depending on how clear the atmosphere is at the time.

Sunset before the Blood moon. The full moon was fully obscured before lighting up again with a faint red glow. Its other name is the Old Moon.

Michelle Vincent from the Astrology Society of South Africa interpreted what the lunar eclipse energy means for believers in astrology.
