Microsoft in bid to make Xbox Live worldwide cross-platform gaming backend

The segment, "Xbox Live: Growing & Engaging Your Gaming Community Across Platforms" will be presented by Microsoft, with Jeffrey Shi and Ramsey Khadder apparently headlining the talk. This kind of cross-functionality of the service could make Xbox Live a far more appealing alternative to current social gaming options.

At GDC 2019 in March, Microsoft will be hosting a developer session to reveal an upcoming Xbox Live SDK the company says will bring the service to Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. For instance, Xbox owners will be able to boast about their gaming achievements to their friends on the Nintendo Switch side, and vice-versa.

The news underscores Microsoft's focus on bringing its services to multiple platforms. Most famous of these is Minecraft, which requires players to use an Xbox Live login on Android, iOS, and Switch. By using Azure-hosted game servers and streaming clients like the PlayFab platform Microsoft acquired just a few days ago, Microsoft promises that "any Console Native game now shipping in the Microsoft Store on Xbox will be capable of streaming to a mobile device" without developers having to alter their game code at all.

The subject of cross play actually to a head recently with Fortnite, during which we saw Microsoft and Sony sniping at one another over the latter's reticence to allow cross play on its PS4 consoles. Instead of coding up your own account structure and online presence, the argument goes, why not simply plug into the preexisting, millions-strong Xbox Live user base?

The lecture is meant to introduce developers to the software, and sell them on why they should include it in their games. It also positions Microsoft as a social-network client for indies looking to build ready-made communities around their games, and gives Xbox Live a foothold on a variety of devices as the mobile gaming market continues to heat up.
