Tulsi Gabbard: 'Assad is not the enemy of the United States'

Apart from one statement criticizing Israeli conduct during clashes with Palestinians on its border with the Gaza Strip in May 2018, Gabbard's public stances on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and USA foreign policy in the Middle East have been viewed positively by pro-Israel groups.

Gabbard, who is not of Indian descent but comes from a Hindu family in Hawaii said the road ahead is not be easy and the battles will be tough. She launched her White House campaign at a rally in her home state of Hawaii over the weekend.

She joins Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Obama administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro in the field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president.

After graduating with honors from the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at the Alabama Military Academy, Gabbert deployed again to Kuwait as a military police officer, and she continues to serve as a major in the National Guard. There she serves on the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees, where she has advocated for veterans. "And that's exactly what we talked about". Before even making her candidacy official, she posted a video and series of tweets apologizing for a previous lack of support for LGBTQ issues.

In a statement to CNN, she said: "First, let me say I regret the positions I took in the past, and the things I said".

US Democrat Tulsi Gabbard officially kicked started her presidential campaign here on Saturday (local time).

Gabbard has supported progressive legislation during her time in Congress, including backing Medicare for all and a Green New Deal.

Now in her fourth term in Congress, Gabbard says she brings with her a broad range of real world experience, a storehouse of personal strength, and tested leadership.

She also said her meeting with Assad, which drew criticism in light of the Syrian leader's record of human rights violations, was important in "the pursuit of peace". She promised to "end the regime-change wars that have taken far too many lives and undermined our security by strengthening terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda".

The NBC report, published Saturday, said that analysis shows "the main English-language news sites employed by Russian Federation in its 2016 election meddling shows Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii ... has become a favorite of the sites Moscow used when it interfered in 2016".

And now it has come to this: A war veteran announcing her candidacy for president of the United States has been attacked by NBC News because she has a point of view that also happens to be held by the Russian president.
