Tonight's UFC 234 Main Event Scrapped, Former Champion Elevated Into Headline Fight

The highly anticipated No. 1 contender match between rising New Zealand star Israel Adesanya (15-0) and Brazilian veteran Anderson Silva (34-8) will now serve as the main event on the Rod Laver Arena card. The issue is not believed to be related to his weight cut.

According to a report by ESPN, Whittaker suffered a hernia in his abdomen and could not be cleared to compete.

The cancellation of the bout poses the question of whether or not Gastelum will get the first shot at Whittaker's belt when he returns from injury, with the victor of the fight between Adesanya and Silva guaranteed a title shot.

At this time, there is no word on when the fight between Whittaker and Gastelum will be rescheduled.

Was Earth's 4th-Hottest Year On Record, Scientists Say
Even an increase of 1.5 degrees will have dire consequences, according to the United Nations science panel on climate change. In fact, the past five years have been, "collectively, the warmest years in the modern record", according to NASA.

In the co-main event Israel Adesanya looks to collect even more hype by finishing Anderson "The Spider" Silva. The event was scheduled to take place in Melbourne, Australia, due to the 28-year-old's status as the first Australian to hold a UFC belt.

For all the good luck that the UFC had in keeping fights scheduled through January, February is not starting off the same way. The Early Prelim headlining bout pitting Lando Vannata vs. Marcos Mariano has been elevated to the UFC 234 Pay-Per-View main card.

The hype surrounding the Adesanya-Silva fight has been arguably just as big as the Whittaker-Gastelum showdown, if not bigger.
