Missing Catherine Shaw: Body found in Guatemala

Catherine Shaw, 23, from Witney, Oxfordshire, was last seen in the San Pedro area of Lake Atitlán.

In a statement, the National Institute of Forensic Sciences of Guatemala also said 23-year-old Catherine Shaw had died four to six days earlier.

She had been staying in the Lake Atitlan area of the central American country and was last seen by a friend the previous night.

"Catherine just loved mountains and sunrises", the family was quoted as saying.

Her parents put up a video appeal on the Twitter account of the Lucie Blackman Trust, a British charity that provides support to the families who have relatives missing, murdered or in a crisis overseas.

In a statement released through the trust, Ms Shaw's parents said: 'She has always been really good about keeping in touch and informing us of her whereabouts and activities.

She left again for the last time at 5.23am, heading in the direction of the lake.

Trust chief executive Matthew Searle said speculation that she was raped and murdered was "incredibly unhelpful, distressing and unnecessary".

It has also been confirmed that she did not have a tattoo on her ribs.

It added: "Formal identification has not taken place but the body is believed to be Catherine".

Family and friends searching for Shaw said she left the hotel with a puppy that was later located at the peak of Indian Nose trail, which is frequented by hikers.

"We are extremely anxious about Catherine and we hope she is found as soon as possible".

The woman's father had arrived in Guatemala to assist the search for Shaw, the British Embassy confirmed, adding that it was supporting the family and authorities.

Catherine has been travelling since September last year, previously visiting Mexico and California.

In a heartfelt video appeal, they urged anyone who had information about Catherine Shaw to get in touch.
