Chinese GP: Lewis Hamilton wins #Race1000, leads Mercedes 1-2

Valtteri Bottas narrowly grabbed pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, with Lewis Hamilton beside him in a dominant Mercedes front-row lockout. Leclerc finished in fifth behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Hamilton, a five-time victor in China, said: "I didn't give up and kept pushing right to the end".

Wolff said that the extra speed carried in the corners was what kept Mercedes ahead of the Ferrari's in qualifying.

After taking the lead, Hamilton edged away from Bottas, building a five-second lead before his first pit stop on lap 22.

Victory was even sweeter for Hamilton - the 75th of his career.

With Vettel ostensibly quicker, the team ordered Leclerc to let Vettel through on lap 11 and he did so. Leclerc, likewise, on his team-mate Vettel.

"I think this is a very important discussion to have and we have had that discussion since Monza 2014, that was the race after Spa", he said.

But that did not work either, and Leclerc pitted on lap 22, only five after Verstappen, rejoining now 11 seconds behind the Red Bull exclusively because of his weaker strategy.

Hamilton leads Valtteri Bottas and the Ferraris during the race.

Vettel's best effort was also compromised by an error.

A strike from Aaron Ramsey and an own goal by Kalidou Koulibaly were in the first half were enough to earn a win for Arsenal in the first leg at home.

He was briefly into second place, but Bottas soon passed him and Vettel and Verstappen began to haul him in. But I obviously prioritised to make the lap. These questions will hang over Ferrari for some time to come.

Renault's Daniel Ricciardo took seventh, ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez and Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen.

"We made it to the top of the timesheets but it is always very hard to find a good balance through an entire lap on this track", said Bottas.

Although he has not enjoyed the strongest start to the season and is still attempting to extract the best from his vehicle, he has scored well with second in the opening race now followed by two wins.

Baku in two weeks time. But who would ever bet against Mercedes?

A version of the agreement still exists at the team even though the Bottas/Hamilton rivalry has not been as tense as Hamilton's battle with Rosberg between 2014 and 2016.

"They [Mercedes] are b****y quick in the corners". If everyone would have sped up the way I did, then yeah, we would have all made it.

"Our vehicle looks really good in terms of downforce level, but we need to improve our straight-line speed".

"I think we are getting more and more there, understanding maybe some things related to different tracks, which Barcelona [testing] doesn't show because it's different".

The race was billed as the 1,000th in Formula One history dating from the first race in 1950 at the Silverstone circuit in England.
