Former Peru president, Alan Garcia, shoots himself

REUTERS/Guadalupe Pardo A supporter of Peru's former President Alan Garcia reacts as she tries to enter a hospital where Garcia was taken after he shot himself, in Lima, Peru April 17, 2019.

Garcia survived the suicide attempt and authorities transported him to Casimiro Ulloa hospital for emergency surgery.

"He is in a critical condition", said Peru's health ministry. It broadcast images of Garcia's son and supporters arriving at the hospital.

Lawyer Erasmo Reyna confirmed the shooting to local television outlet N. Local television program "Hablemos Claro" reported that when police arrived to Garcia's residence to arrest him, the ex-president shut himself in his room and attempted to take his life.

Interior Minister Carlos Moran said at a news conference before Garcia died that the former president had told police he needed to call his attorney after they arrived at his home in Lima to arrest him.

Garcia, who served as president from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011, was under investigation for bribery in connection with a massive corruption scandal that has engulfed a number of former Latin American leaders.

Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia was hospitalized Wednesday after he shot himself before being detained by police amid allegations he received illegal payment from a Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.

Brooklyn parents sue city to stop vaccine order aimed at curbing measles
When more than five cases of measles are reported in a place in a short span of time , it is considered an outbreak. In response to recent measles outbreaks, calls have mounted in several countries to make immunisation mandatory.

Garcia was banned from leaving the country while under investigation in the Odebrecht case, while President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was forced to resign in March 2018 after allegations he repeatedly lied about his connections to Odebrecht.

Garcia, 69, was rushed to the hospital in the capital Lima on Wednesday, the agency said.

During his first term in office, Garcia made history by becoming the country's youngest president at the time as he sat on the most coveted seat aged only 36.

He had denied wrongdoing involving Odebrecht, and blamed his legal troubles on political persecution.

He applied for asylum but following 16 days in the embassy he left when his request was denied.

Authorities say Odebrecht officials shipped cash across the globe - from one shell bank account to the next - en route to politicians' pockets in a dozen countries, including Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, and Mozambique.
