Hurricanes coach angry after Ovechkin knocks out rookie in playoff fight

The young Russian for Carolina wouldn't stop jawing and throwing slight jabs at the Stanley Cup champion in front of the net.

Alex Ovechkin has knocked out a rising National Hockey League star Andrei Svechnikov with just a few powerful punches as things got heated between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes during the latest Stanley Cup playoff round. Ovechkin made quick work of Svechnikov, landing three clean punches right in his face. This was a rare fight for Ovechkin, one that knocked the 19-year-old Svechnikov from the game when he banged his helmet on the ice as he fell backward and ended up in concussion protocol.

Svechnikov may have lost the fight but his team won the battle on the night, as Carolina went on to win 5-0. We're always careful. This year, we've dealt with [concussions] with I don't know how many guys and when they were ready to come back, we waited weeks after.

"He asked me to fight and said, 'Let's go, '" Ovechkin recalled. So it's a little bit frustrating because he got hurt.

Tempers flared enough for Ovechkin to indulge in just the fourth fight of his career, and first since almost a decade ago, according to

Carolina's Andrei Svechnikov kept dogging Ovechkin, trying to bait him into a fight during the first period. It was his first in the playoffs, while Svechnikov had not been in a fight all season. And that's Ovi, not our guy.
