Disney takes Hulu control: Here’s what it means to your shows

As of now, "Disney will assume full operational control of Hulu, effective immediately", according to a press release. That will mean that Comcast can require Disney to buy out NBCUniversal's interest in Hulu for its fair market value. The news comes after Disney and Comcast struck a deal in which Comcast handed over the steering wheel while agreeing to sell its stake in Hulu to Disney for at least $5.8 billion within five years.

Disney guaranteed a sale price of Hulu valued at no less than $27.5 billion.

At the same time, Comcast's NBCUniversal will have the right to cancel most of its content-licensing agreements with Hulu by 2022 - while it will have the right to pull back NBCU programming previously licensed exclusively to Hulu within one year (continuing to make it available to Hulu on a nonexclusive basis).

Disney, which is trying to challenge the dominance of Netflix in a competitive streaming landscape, is preparing to launch its own streaming service called Disney+ on November 12 and the control of Hulu would add weight to the company's goals. We do have a lowest-possible figure already, mind.

Disney and Comcast have also agreed to fund Hulu's recent purchase of AT&T Inc.'s 9.5% interest in Hulu, dividing the service completely between the two for the time being.

In addition to that Marvel content, Hulu is development TV series based on Sweet Tooth, Motor Girl, Old City Blues, and Woke. Comcast also agreed to extend the Hulu license of NBCUniversal content until late 2024, and the company will still distribute Hulu on its Xfinity X1 platform. But once the entire stake is owned by Disney, that will give the House of Mouse an overall 93% controlling stake in the streaming service. NBCUniversal can cut off its content for Hulu within three years, if no new agreement exists. After all, a significant part of Hulu's appeal to subscribers is the variety of shows they can access on the service. And that's not to mention all the R-rated Fox films that can be put on Hulu instead of Disney+.
