STEM cleared the concerns following an investigation, where they hoped parents and students would give information about the allegations.

District attorney George Brauchler said he has not decided whether to file adult charges but added that McKinney is old enough to be charged as an adult without a judge's review.

According to a law enforcement official, Erickson used two handguns from his parents to open fire.

Brauchler is considering charging McKinney as an adult, he said.

"We expressed our concerns directly to DCSO, and they offered us a better alternative to have a daily part-time, off-duty sheriff's deputy with a squad vehicle", the firm said.

The security guard who detained the second armed suspect was employed by Boss High Level Protection, a company started by a former SWAT team leader who responded to the Columbine shooting. The parent stated that the school suffered from "an extremely high drug culture...student violence due to a high pressure environment...and safety issues".

STEM school officials filed a lawsuit in January against the anonymous parent for spreading "defamatory statements" about the school, reports CBS News.

The attack unfolded almost three weeks after neighboring Littleton marked the 20th anniversary of the Columbine attack that killed 13 people. Both men made comments interpreted by students, community members, and survivors of the shooting to be inappropriately political.

Another user tweeted: '20 years later, 7 miles from Columbine, and 0 actions taken in Washington to protect kids from gun violence'.
