Pakistan cricket team rocked by tragic death of Asif Ali's daughter

He was selected on the back of some impressive performances during the England series, where two fifties contributed to a total of 142 runs (in four innings) but, more importantly, at a strike rate of 131.48.

The selectors had discarded Wahab from the tour to England but after the thrashing given to the Pakistani pacers in the one-day series they apparently had a change of mind. They had the opportunity to cement their Word Cup spots, but they were well below-par in the series against England even though they were up against the hard challenge of bowling on placid and batsmen-friendly wickets. England on the other hand managed to complete a 4-0 thrashing over Pakistan, sending a massive warning to their World Cup opponents just days before the start of the tournament which commences from May 30.

"Dropping Abid Ali [to make way for Asif's selection] was a very hard decision", Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan's chief selector, said on Monday.

"The combination of both these elements, meant that we believed that right now, utilising the World Cup experience and knowledge of Wahab was the correct choice. But we needed a power-hitter at number 6 or 7 and Asif has done very well for us in this England series so we need him", said Inzamam. For Junaid, the news was particularly galling after he had already been shut out of playing in a World Cup twice.

"We thought that during the England series, we lacked experience in our bowling and that is why we have included Riaz in the squad", he said.

Pakistan's senior batsman Shoaib Malik got out in a freakish fashion against England in the 4th ODI played in Trent Bridge on Friday. But, he was our third choice opener.

Pakistan batsman Asif Ali's daughter, who suffered from stage four cancer, died in a hospital in the United States on Sunday, Pakistan Super League (PSL) side Islamabad United has said.
