NOAA forecasts near-normal 2019 Atlantic hurricane season

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the coming Atlantic hurricane season will be around normal, with four to eight hurricanes.

Staff with the Canadian Hurricane Centre will present their forecast and provide information about how to prepare for strong storms and hurricanes.

"We're expecting a near-normal season but regardless, that's a lot of activity, and we need to get ready now", Bell said.

This week, the first named storm, Andrea, formed hundreds of miles east of Florida and the Carolinas before dissipating. The chances of an above-normal season or a below-normal season are both 30%, according to NOAA.

NOAA says its outlook reflects "competing climate factors", including the current El Niño that should continue to dampen the season's intensity. At the same time, an expected combination of warmer-than-average sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea - in addition to an enhanced west African monsoon - favor increased hurricane activity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted on May 22 there will be five to eight named tropical cyclones in the region from June 1 through November 30.

Chris Brenchley, director of NOAA's Central Pacific Hurricane Center said that is above the normal of 4-5 per season.

It noted that this season is expected to be slightly above the yearly average of 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

Four to five storms each season is considered normal. "However, one of those named storms was Hurricane Andrew, which devastated South Florida as a Category 5 hurricane", the channel noted.
