China lodges solemn representations with USA over Huawei

USA lawmakers also moved Wednesday to provide about $700 million in grants to help US telecoms providers with the cost of removing Huawei equipment from their networks, and to block the use of equipment or services from Chinese telecoms firms Huawei and ZTE in next-generation 5G networks.

Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports and is planning to hit another $300 billion worth, a move that would extend import taxes to just about everything China ships to the United States.

With no resolution in sight, US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue yesterday announced a US$16 billion aid programme to help US farmers hurt by the conflict, with some funds to be used to open markets outside China to US products.

Washington this month hiked existing tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods to 25% from 10%, prompting Beijing to retaliate with its own levies on USA imports.

Last week, the USA government banned American companies from doing business with Huawei, escalating a heated trade war between the world's two largest economies.

Formal talks between US and China have stalled.

"For them to say that they don't work with the Chinese government is false", says Pompeo.

"According to our estimates, these higher tariffs are likely to create large economic distortions and reduce US tariff revenues", according to a blog post Thursday by Mary Amiti, assistant vice president at the New York Fed, Stephen Redding of Princeton University and David Weinstein of Columbia University.

"The package we are announcing today ensures that farmers will not bear the brunt of trade practices of China or any other nation", Perdue said. "Yes, probably in specific cases", he said.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Trump suggested that he might be willing to make the embattled Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei part of the trade talks with China.

The FSIS will be able to provide more clarity about the end destination of the recalled products in the coming days, McKay says. A spreadsheet released by the department names more than 40 products included in the recall.

A top business lobby group representing American firms in China said they have "real concerns" over how Beijing may respond to U.S. action taken against Huawei.

Taiwan is one of a growing number of flashpoints in the U.S.

"China is going to pay for these this 16 billion dollars through tariffs coming in a transfer coming in, and we are doing again through the (Civilian Conservation Corps) program which was authorized as we used a year ago", Perdue said on Fox Business on Thursday morning.

He said he would see Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the end of June during the G-20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

Trump voiced optimism about reaching a trade deal with Beijing, despite renewed tariff tensions.

For years, China has blocked major U.S. tech firms, including Google and Facebook, from fully operating in its market. But tariffs are taxes paid by USA importers, and studies have shown that American consumers and businesses usually end up absorbing the higher costs.

The group represents more than 900 USA companies working in China. Based on last year's trade, that leaves about $45 billion in imports from the U.S.

As the trade dispute drags on, battering Chinese manufacturers and raising uncertainty for investors, Beijing has stepped up efforts to sway opinion in its favor both at home and overseas.

In a letter signed by 173 companies, including Nike and Adidas, they said the president's decision to hike import tariffs to 25 percent will disproportionately impact the working class.
