"In the second half, we wanted to show that we were superior than Australia and we improved a lot of things about our style of play".

The third day of the FIFA Women's World Cup provided the first upset of the tournament.

Nonetheless, Italy kept their composure and managed to restore parity four minutes before the hour-mark, when Bonansea caught the Aussie's backline red-handed, and with a superb solo effort managed to net Italy's first World Cup goal in 20 years.

Looking for her first World Cup goal, Matildas captain Sam Kerr twice got into risky positions in the first five minutes but couldn't get a meaningful shot away.

Italy's triumph wasn't merited by the statistics; they were starved of possession and took just five shots to Australia's 17.
