Messi made $127 million a year ago, followed by Ronaldo's $109 million while Neymar trailed just behind the Portuguese superstar with $105 million.

For the second successive year, Lionel Messi sits above arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo in Forbes' latest rich list, ranking as the best-earning footballer across the globe.

Soccer stars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar are leading the way in terms of being the highest paid athletes in the world.

Barcelona and Argentina star Messi dethroned retired five division world champion Floyd Mayweather as the sports world's highest earner, raking in $127 million via salary and endorsement deals.

Athletes had to earn a minimum of $37.7 million to make this year's list.

Mayweather, who only had an exhibition bout on December 31 in Japan, went from being the top earner on the 2018 list, due to his 2017 mega-fight with Conor McGregor, from not being on the list at all.

Among female athletes, the only one to emerge in the standings is the United States tennis player Serena Williams, with 25.7 million euros per year and a distant 63rd among the 100 published.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was the highest earning National Basketball Association player, with $89 million, while Golden State's Stephen Curry was ninth with $79.8 million.
